The Practice
3D modeller and designer
The Practice is a dentistry practice recreated in VR. Created for the University of Utah’s School of Dentistry, it was made to serve as a virtual teaching tool and simulation. I worked on this project as lead designer and 3D modeler.
The design of the building was based on the current School of Dentistry’s building. All of the assets had to be modeled to an exact scale to create immersion and accuracy in VR.
I learned a lot on this project. I had never had to model things to the exact millimeter on such small instruments and tools. While not all models were created by me, they all required re-topologizing in order to look and perform better in the simulation.
I worked closely with our lead programmer to experiment with new haptic technologies that we could implement or try to emulate in our simulated practice.
3D model examples
I 3D modeled almost all of the dentistry tools used in The Practice. All models had to be to exact scale and was a unique challenge for me. I had never modelled to such exact specifications before and I learned a lot through trial and error. It was very rewarding to be able to see my models used in the simulations.
